HD & Hormone Wipe Sampling

Detect hazardous drug & hormone residues with confidence.

Quantitative testing for up to 18 HD or 5 hormones from a single surface sample.

Meet and Exceed Regulatory Compliance Requirements

Healthcare workers who prepare, administer, or work near hazardous drugs may be exposed to HD or hormone residue, making routine wipe sampling essential for maintaining a safe environment. According to USP <800>, and NIOSH, facilities should conduct surface sampling at least every six months, or after any major facility changes, to quickly identify contamination hotspots and reduce exposure risks. These guidelines also recommend establishing a surveillance program, and leveraging historical data to continuously monitor environmental risks and assess potential employee exposure to hazardous drugs.

Why surface sampling matters

Contamination can extend beyond the compounding area

Why sample this area?

01 Preparation area

Compounding hood

The interior work surface of a compounding hood is directly involved in hazardous drug preparation and may be affected by spills, droplets or contact transfer.

Recommended action

Include a consistent location within the hood and use the same defined surface area during repeat sampling.

Four objectives of hazardous drug surface sampling

Surface sampling provides more than a single laboratory result. Select an objective to explore how quantitative monitoring can support safer and more consistent practices.

01

Objective one

Create measurable contamination data

Quantitative surface sampling provides measurable results that can be compared between locations and sampling periods. This helps teams establish a baseline and better understand changes over time.

Why it matters

Measurable values provide more context than a simple detected or not-detected result.

  • Establish a contamination baseline
  • Compare future sampling periods
  • Support informed decisions

Wipe sampling locations should be based on identifying drug preparation, administration and disposal areas with potential for trace contamination. USP <800> recommends, at a minimum, the following locations:

– Interior of the containment primary engineering control (C-PEC) (eg, biological safety cabinet or containment ventilated enclosure)
– Pass-through chambers
– Surfaces in staging or work areas near the C-PEC
– Areas adjacent to C-PECs (eg, floors directly under the C-PEC, staging and dispensing spaces)
– Areas immediately outside the HD buffer room or the containment segregated compounding area (C-SCA)

Yes. While HD compounding occurs in the pharmacy, contamination risks extend into clinic and patient care areas where drugs are administered and disposed of. Nurses and other clinical staff may be exposed to HD residues during infusion, patient handling, and waste management. Sampling should also include HD delivery bin, counter in the nursing area, infusion pump in the patient room, keyboard of computer, and bathroom.

Quantitative methods provide precise measurements (ng/cm² or ng/225 cm²), offering clear advantages over qualitative testing, which only indicates whether contamination is present or not. We offer among the lowest limits of detection (LODs) in the industry, allowing us to identify even the smallest traces of contamination that others may miss. Key benefits include:

– The ability to track contamination trends across time and locations
– Measurable thresholds for evaluating cleaning effectiveness
– Data-driven insights to guide corrective actions and improve safety

Results are provided through our secure online portal, where you can perform trend analysis and compare data over time. You will also receive a detailed report by email. Turn around time is 2-3 weeks. If contamination is detected, our experts will provide tailored recommendations and guidance to help reduce exposure levels. You can rely on us to support you every step of the way.

Yes. 5-FU and Methotrexate, known as common markers, can be tested through stand-alone drug analysis. Your choice should be guided by the drugs you most frequently compound. We offer flexible options to detect 1, 11, or 21 hazardous drugs (HDs) on the same swab, providing one of the most cost-efficient solutions in the industry. Prices starts at $145 USD/swab or $195 CAN/swab. Reach out to learn more about our exclusive savings on subscription plan.

You will receive everything required to perform the sampling on your own, along with a detailed sampling procedure. We also offer a quick Teams onboarding session to ensure you feel confident carrying out the process. Each kits includes:

– Plastic tubes and caps
– Trays (to hold the plastic tubes)
– Sterile water plastic ampoules (3mL)
– Return parcel with prepaid label
– Adhesive labels
– Filter papers

Yes. We offer home surface wipe-sampling to screen for trace residues of hazardous (antineoplastic) medications on frequently touched household surfaces. This service is designed for patients on chemotherapy, family caregivers, and home-care teams who want added reassurance and guidance on safe handling
